Working Life of Earnings Inadequate for UK Employees to Join Wealthiest 10%, Report Reveals

Per fresh study, the median earner in the UK would need half a century of earnings to reach the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Wealth Gap Over Time

The study analyzed wealth distribution data including the Covid pandemic period and discovered that during the mid-2000s, it would have required nearly four decades of typical employment income to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead part of the study commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a typical full-time employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Wealth Divide

The study revealed that the disparity between the assets of the typical individual and an individual in the richest segment was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms by recent times.

The economist further stated: "These differences are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – people that start life well-off tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the financial disparity growing in specific figures, the portion of overall assets in the UK possessed by the richest households – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," according to the research.

During this period, total wealth in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Factors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "unearned" appreciation, through rising house prices and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap since 2010, as stated in the analysis.

These increases typically went to older, property-owning households, the research shows – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Generational Wealth Disparities

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from £135k in 2006-08, to £310k.

Area-Based Differences

Furthermore, the study revealed stark area-based disparities, with the average level of assets in the pandemic period standing at 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Impact

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns curtailed consumption options, the information reveals many households were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families fared much better, nevertheless. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the report finds.
