One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
