British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
